Youtube – a Personal Time Machine

Youtube – a Personal Time Machine

Online video sharing is such a powerful tool.  To entertain.  Catch up. To enlighten.  But it is also a personal time machine.  For 13 years I kept a most vivid experience in my memory, and only rolled it out when friends discussed their favourite concerts.  In 1996 a few friends and I went to see Rage Against the Machine in Montreal at the Verdun arena.  The scene was apocalyptic, hot as hell and as you’ll see from the comments below it was a shared experience.   The scene was a hyperbole of what a rock concert should be, almost overdone, a sweaty graphic display of skin and adrenalin.  what concerts were probably like before ticketmaster.  word in the crowd was that the air conditioning had gone bust, and there was a foot of water on the concession floor.  People were just sitting in the filth and they didn’t care.  Nobody cared about anything except that show.  It was powerful, measured by every one of our senses.  A life moment.  And then it was over, and it became a mention in conversations about favourite concerts.   Keep in mind in 1996 not many people were  running around with small home video cameras let alone flipcams .  that’s why i was so amazed to see this video (there are two on youtube).  Someone taped it, the sound quality is terrible and doesn’t do justice to the exeperience, but there it was!  A time machine.

Tell me about anything amazing you’ve found on youtube!

Here are some of the comments people have posted online:

“thx for the mtl videos! i was at this show? and never saw any footage until today! thanks again”

”On the hottest day of that summer of 1996, the hottest concert I ever been to!!
The crowd was just crazy, out of breath (so as Zack sometimes). I wish we could see a little of the slam…
Thanks for that vid! I have a special thought for my ex-friends, Benoit and Nicolas, and for the most awesome girl I’ve ever met? at the end of that show!

”It was so hot in the Verdun Auditorium? that day that people were being carried out from overheating. Must have been over 40 Celsius in there. Great show”

”I was curious and checked the stats for that year and IT WAS actually the hottest day of the year of 1996!!! Haha, how crazy.”?
