Video – A New Age of Storytelling in Video Gaming

This is a companion production to promote the launch of the game Assassin’s Creed 2, a title produced by Ubisoft Montreal.  The idea of storytelling in gaming in not new, but it is too often an undervalued ingredient.  People are designed to react emotionally to classic storylines.   What doesn’t work is a montage of moments.  If you watched a compilation of 100 famous football touchdowns it would have less impact than the amateur game I saw over the weekend in which there were seven lead changes and the much heralded quarterback was injured while attempting the game winning drive.  Even an unstoppable title like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2  is getting some criticism for lacking story. In a future post, I will write a tribute to “The Whale” a old method of giving the story a shape.  Good movies have it, songs have it, books have it, and some games have it.  This game will see the benefits of having it.     Well done.
